David Gilbert, Conductor

David Gilbert is Conductor in Residence at the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, Music Director of the Greenwich (Connecticut) Symphony Orchestra, and Music Director of the Senior Concert Orchestra of New York. He has been highly acclaimed for his dynamic performances with orchestras throughout the United States, Europe and the Far East. After winning First Prize in the 1970 Dimitri Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition, he served as Assistant Conductor of the New York Philharmonic 1970-79, was Principal Conductor of the American Ballet Theatre 1971-75, and Chief Assistant to Pierre Boulez at the 1976 Bayreuth Festival. 

At China's invitation, he served as Principal Guest Conductor and Music Adviser of the Beijing  Philharmonic (1980-82). The first American musician to hold a position of national prominence in China, Mr. Gilbert was instrumental in rebuilding that nation's major symphony orchestra.
 

Mr. Gilbert's guest conducting has included the New York Philharmonic, the New Jersey Symphony, and the orchestras of Nashville, Rochester, Oakland, Pittsburgh, Louisville, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, Milan's RAI Orchestra, and the Seoul Philharmonic. He spent 7 summers as Music Director of the Lake Placid Sinfonietta, and 9 years as  a guest conductor at the Manchester, Vermont, Festival. For 3 recent summers he conducted a series of concerts at the International Piano Festival in Tenerife, Canary Islands. In 2004-5, Mr. Gilbert served as the United States judge for the Pedrotti International Conducting Competition in Trento, Italy. 

As Resident Conductor at the Manhattan School of Music, Mr. Gilbert has given several important opera premieres, including the New York premiere of Shostakovich's "The Nose" in 1985, and the U.S. premiere of Martinu's "Mirandolina" in 2004. He conducted a series of recordings of American operas for Manhattan School on Albany Records.
 

Composer and flutist as well, Mr. Gilbert resides in New Jersey with his wife, Nonie. They are the proud parents of Halley, Mara, and Karl.

The manager of Carnegie Hall Recording Studio in New York completed his education in his native Poland
at the Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw earning Master’s of Music Degree in Tonmeister Studies,
class of Professor Antoni Karuzas. Prior to this he studied violin at the Lodz Conservatory of Music
finishing it with a professional diploma.


His first assignment in 1976 was with Polish Jazz Society’s record label “Poljazz”, for which he
recorded/produced over 30 LP’s. Between 1977 and 1979 he worked for Polish Radio making classical
studio and concert recordings/live broadcasts.

 

After moving to the U.S. in 1979 he worked for National Public Radio in Washington, D.C. as a sound
engineer, eventually becoming a technical director of “Weekend All Things Considered”.

His association with Carnegie Hall started in 1985 when he was asked to record concerts for popular radio
program “AT&T Presents Carnegie Hall Tonight” hosted by John Rubinstein. Since then he recorded in
performance at Carnegie Hall some of the most famous orchestras, choruses, chamber music groups and
soloists of our time. Many of those recordings have been released on CD’s, among them: Evgeny Kissin,
Marilyn Horne, Leontine Price, Piotr Anderszewski.


Since 1998 he teaches a course: “Aesthetics of Recording” at the New York University.
